The Column

Columnar Oil Sight Glasses are attached to an oil-containing component near the drain port and are great to read the oil volume. The tube is piped into the machine at a low oil level. The advantage is that even when the oil volume is low, the level in the sight glass can usually be seen.

Oil Sight Glass and Level Monitor

When properly installed at the oil reservoir drain port, the Oil Sight Glass & Level Monitor allows the user to view the oil colour, clarity, and accumulation of water or other contaminates.

  • The strong, clear cast acrylic body allows for viewing of the level.
  • The spring loaded drain valve is positioned to quickly discharge any water before it damages the oil lubricity.
  • Red and green Buna O-rings are included with the OSGL to mark upper and lower limits, or to designate running oil level and idle oil level.
  • Each Oil Sight Gauge & Level Monitor comes with a 2 micron breather, which allows the oil level to equalize with the level inside the system.

If you require a closed loop system, install the OSGL without the breather and use the top opening to port back into your equipment.

The height of the upper column comes in heights from 3" to 24" to correspond to the distance from the oil reservoir access port and the maximum height the oil will reach. Custom sizes are available.

A Dual Port Oil Sight Glass & Level Monitor version is available with a second 3/8" NPT port opposite the installation nipple to allow the installation of a Sample Port for oil sampling. Oil Sight Glass & Level Monitor are offered with 3/8” NPT single or dual side ports and in 3”, 6”, 9”, 12”, 15”, 18”, or 24” lengths.

The Oil Sight Glass and Level Monitor (OSGL) provide continuous and instantaneous monitoring of oil clarity, water contamination and oil level. This all-in-one tool allows for a quick and easy inspection for predictive maintenance professionals to easily assess what is going on in their equipment.

Oil Level Indicator (OLI)

The Oil Level Indicator (OLI) was developed in response to the need of maintenance professionals to gauge the oil level inside large tanks, gearboxes and reservoirs.

When water contamination is not a problem or when a regular Oil Sight Glass is already installed at the drain port, the Oil Level Indicator can be utilized to monitor oil level.

The oil gauge indicator is a clear acrylic tube with ½” NPT threads at each end. Red and green decals are included with the OLI to mark upper and lower limits, or to designate running oil level and idle oil level. Oil Gauge Indicators can be installed with the optional breather* at the top ½” NPT port as seen on the Oil Sight Glass and Level Monitor.

If the user requires a closed loop, the ½” NPT can be used as a connector port to feed back into the system. Operators can visually monitor the oil for dirt and debris and take appropriate preventive action.

The Oil Level Indicator is offered in 3”, 6”, 9”, 12” and 15” lengths. Longer lengths, custom options, and additional hardware available. The Oil Level Indicator (OLI) is a tube of cast acrylic offered in various lengths which allows you to easily see a 360° view of your oil level in equipment. Made to replace the brass and glass sight gauges that stain and leak, the OLI is built to last.

Specification

  • Red and Green Decals included to mark running and idle oil levels
  • Top has NPT thread for optional 2 micron breather or adaptor for closed loop systems
  • Breathers are not included and must be purchased separately
  • See FAQs  for more information

Operating Range

  • 82°C (180°F) to 265 PSI
  • 95°C  (203°F) to 66 PSI
  • 110°C  (230°F) at atmospheric pressure
  •  -40°C (-40°F) minimum low temperature

The Column

The Column is a crystal-clear oil level sight glass that allows you to visually inspect the condition and level of oil in pumps, gearboxes, storage tanks and reservoirs. It features a one-piece design with 1-inch NPT threads at each end and includes a 3-micron breather. The Column can also be plumbed to vent back into the equipment's head space. Two tamper-proof level rings mark the idle and running oil level. Each ring is made of durable polycarbonate and secured in place with a hex screw.

Specification

  • Body Material: Impact-resistant acrylic
  • Strong: Large diameter and thickness for added strength
  • Outdoor Compatible: UV-resistant & withstands long-term sun exposure
  • Threads: 1" NPT male threads at each end

FAQ Columnar Sight Glasses

Why use an Oil level Indicator instead of a vented sight gauge?

The old style vented sight towers are made of regular glass that is prone to breakage. The brass housing provides some protection, but creates the problem of low to no visibility of the oil color, quality and level. The Esco Oil Level Indicator is made of strong cast acrylic that provides 360° of oil level viewing. Operators can visually monitor the oil for dirt and debris and take appropriate preventive action.

How is the Oil level Indicator (OLI) installed?

Use an elbow to install the OLI at the drain port. It can be installed with the optional breather at the top ½” NPT port. If you require a closed loop, the ½” NPT can be used as a connector port to feed back into the system. For units longer than 12”, use a support bracket for stability.

Where is the best place to install the Oil sight Glass or Oil sight Glass level monitor?

We recommend installing the Oil Sight Glass and Oil Sight Glass Level Monitor at the lowest point of the oil reservoir; typically the drain port. Water contamination will separate from high quality oils and migrate to the OSG where it can be purged from the system. Unwanted sediment and particles are visible in the OSG. Upon inspection, the user can determine the appropriate action to initiate.

What materials are the Oil Sight Glass and Oil Sight Glass & Level Monitor components made from and how resistant are they to corrosion?

The oil sight glass is manufactured from strong, stain-resistant cast acrylic. The drain valve is made from brass with a vulcanized rubber seal. Both materials have excellent resistance to hydrocarbon and petroleum-based products, hydraulic fluids, most silicone fluids, and fuels. A detailed chemical resistance chart is available upon request.

Why would I need to use the Oil sight Glass level monitor?

When seeing and maintaining the level of oil in your reservoir is critical, the Oil Sight Glass and Level Monitor (OSGL) provides all the benefits of the OSG plus the ability to constantly monitor the level of the reservoir oil. The dual port model has a second 3/8” NPT thread at 180° to allow the installation of a drain valve or access to the oil reservoir utilizing a pitot tube and a pitot sample adapter. This all-in-one product provides continuous monitoring of the clarity, color, sediment, water contamination and level of the oil.
